"Beach bum..."

Heard these random words in a conversation today.

I wasn't particularly eavesdropping, but these two words, uttered with great excitement by the young lady in cut-off denim shorts with frayed edges and white pockets showing, was loud enough for me to hear. It was quite obvious that the prospect of a summer spent lazing on the beach, filled her with glee.

We are kindred spirits, this young stranger and I; we are lovers of the ocean, a generation removed.

"beach bum..." her voice broke into a light lilting air on saying these words & it became a melodious outcry, a yearning for the ocean, for the lazy days of summer.

The Fresh Prince said it best!

"Summer, summer, summertime

Time to sit back and unwind ..."

BEACH BUMS!

BUMS ON BEACHES!

I made my way out of the store and into the crowded mall; a lingering sense of dread persisting. The bags weighing heavily on my arms; my high heels impeding my motion. I wanted the comfort of shorts and flip flops, I wanted the only things in my shopper to be suntan oil and lip gloss.

Instead I was lugging Handy Andy, StaSoft and bagsful of detergent needed for my weekly spring clean. I marched on, forceful, focused, frantic to get out into the open. I caught a glimpse of myself in the shop window, didn't like what I saw.

I hurried on, deep thought doesn't have a place here in shopping-land.

BEACH BUMS

BUMS ON BEACHES

My bum is not at all beach ready!!!

This thought popped into my head.

In fact, since I last visited the gym in October, my derriere has been awfully neglected. I flexed my muscles slightly (like that would help) and regretted getting re-acquainted with my good ole friends Dorito's & Lays.

I plonked myself down on the nearest bench, laid down my heavy burden & one by one, removed my offending shoes.Ah, that's more like it!

A plan was forming at the back of my mind.

As if on automatic, I made my way to the parking lot, hit the highway and headed to where the smell of the ocean came to greet me.

Who needs flip flops when you can go barefoot ?
